Dani Kalarikalayil Raju is an alumnus of IIT Bombay and a passionate HCI researcher based in India. His work focuses on community-centred participatory design of AI technologies, ensuring that innovations are inclusive and contextually relevant. Dani is the co-founder of Studio Hasi, a startup that partners with non-profit organisations and Indian communities to enable their meaningful involvement in the design and implementation of advanced technologies.

Dani is also actively engaged with ACM SIGCHI, where he contributes to the Chapters and Community Support Committees. His efforts focus on driving initiatives that promote equitable participation and inclusion within the global HCI community.

Abstract

Dani will share insights and reflections from his ongoing research collaborations with Swansea University, UK, focusing on co-designing speech and voice-based interaction use cases and datasets for unwritten languages in India. This work involves immersive fieldwork, including traveling to and living with rural Indian communities. In this interactive session, Dani will delve into the unique challenges and opportunities of the Indian rural context and explore approaches to fostering meaningful participation in technology design.
