We had the pleasure of hosting an exciting and energising event that brought together emerging researchers and world-class mentors for a day of exchange, reflection, and growth.

We welcomed 10 exceptional PhD researchers from four leading institutions and countriesLisbonNorthumbriaCarnegie Mellon, and Siegen—representing a broad spectrum of backgrounds and research stages, from pre-PhD researchers to those in their third year of doctoral study.

Their work spanned a range of compelling and socially engaged areas, including:

  • Literacy & Early Childhood
  • Health & Care
  • Urban & Public Space
  • Accessibility & Interaction
  • Global & Cultural Perspectives
  • More-than-Human Design

Throughout the day, participants shared their research through a series of presentations. These were met with insightful and constructive feedback from both peers and a our group of mentors:
Shaun LawsonPam BriggsHugo NicolauAna PiresAnna R L CarterKyle Montague, and Tiago Guerreiro.

In addition to the presentations, we hosted an interactive career discussion session, which created space for open dialogue about academic and non-academic pathways, research identity, wellbeing and building confidence in one’s work. We then rounded off the day with a CV support session, offering feedback and tips to help participants position themselves and their experiences effectively.

The energy in the room was one of collaboration, curiosity, and mutual encouragement. We are incredibly grateful to our mentors for their time, generosity, and guidance, and to the participants for engaging so openly with each other and the process.

We look forward to seeing how these researchers continue to shape the future of Digital Civics and HCI
