Ana Henriques is currently a PhD student at the Interactive Technologies Institute/LARSyS, at the University of Lisbon, advised by Hugo Nicolau and Angelika Strohmayer. Ana has focused their research on the intersections of ethics, feminist HCI and community-based work while exploring what community-led ethics could look like as a process of feminist ethical frameworking for community-based projects. She is also a member of the SIGCHI Equity Committee.
Abstract
This session introduces zine-making as a creative and accessible method for reflection, expression, and critique within research and community contexts. Rooted in DIY culture and activist histories, zines have long served as tools for amplifying marginalised voices, documenting lived experience, and resisting dominant narratives. We begin with a brief history of zines — from their radical origins in punk, feminist, and queer movements, to their growing presence in academic and civic research spaces.
Participants will be guided through key techniques for creating zines, using low-tech, hands-on approaches. The session will offer a series of creative prompts designed to support critical reflection on themes such as care, collaboration, justice, failure, and sustainability — particularly in relation to civic technology and community-based research.
Whether used as a form of personal reflection, speculative design, or community engagement, zine-making invites participants to think with their hands, slow down, and communicate in non-linear, embodied ways. By the end of the session, participants will have produced their own zine pages and gained tools for using zine-making in their own practice, teaching, or research.
